ABC Family Tackles Teen Obesity This Summer with “Huge”

Teen and childhood obesity is a huge topic right now in America, with dietitians, physicians, school boards and families standing back to take a serious look at the issues. With many teens, both male and female, being diagnosed with eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia due to mainstream society standards and conventions, ABC Family is tackling the issues this summer with the first plus-sized teen drama, Huge.

Starring the vivacious Nikki Blonsky, Huge centers around Camp Victory, a plus-sized summer camp for teenagers designed to help them not only lose weight, but build their confidence and develop long-lasting friendships and relationships with others who can identify with their experience.

Blonsky’s character in the show, Will (Wilhelmina) is sent to the camp by her parents, but doesn’t feel she needs to go. She prides herself on her merit as an individual, and promises herself she won’t lose any weight at the camp. Once she arrives, she starts to see things differently, as the other characters she interacts with begin sharing their experiences.

To coincide with the summer series, ABC Family is launching an online program called “Live Huge” that features self-esteem and lifestyle advice and tips for teens.

ABC Family’s teen programming this summer is focusing on hardcore teen issues with shows like Petty Little Liars and Secret Life of the American Teenager. Huge promises to be just as dramatic and inspirational, touching on real teen issues the every day kid can relate to.

Tune in to ABC Family Monday, June 28, at 9 p.m. to check out the pilot for Huge, then be sure to pop back in here tomorrow and let me know what you think about the ABC Family teen summer lineup.

I have to admit, I can't wait to watch this show. The commercials look great, and I love the sassiness that Nikki Blonsky's character has.
